Daniel 11:42

Posted on 18 May at 11:27

He shall stretch foorth his hand also vpon the countreys, and the land of Egypt shall not escape. Daniel 11:42 (KJV)

To understand this verse it helps to view it within the broader context of Daniel 11. The chapter presents a prophetic vision given to Daniel that outlines the historical movements of the Persian, Greek, and Seleucid empires. The verses leading up to Daniel 11:42 provide a narrative of various kings and conflicts that set the stage for the final confrontation.

In Daniel’s vision the “he” of verse 42 refers to the king of the North, a representative of the Seleucid rulers. This king seeks to extend his influence and power over many nations, including Egypt, demonstrating the aggressive expansion characteristic of the period.

History records a clear fulfillment of this prophecy during the reign of Antiochus IV Epiphanes. Antiochus attempted to enlarge his empire, with Egypt as a coveted prize. His campaign against Egypt, however, was halted by the intervention of the Roman Republic, illustrating how the foretold attempt did not succeed.

For believers today the passage offers several applications. First, it reminds us to trust in God’s sovereignty and providence even when political powers seem threatening. Second, it encourages us to place our ultimate hope in divine guidance rather than in human leaders or earthly systems. Finally, it calls us to pray for nations and their rulers, that they might pursue righteousness and justice.

The Book of Daniel contains prophetic visions that operate on multiple layers of meaning and have concrete historical fulfillments. As we study these prophecies, we should approach them with humility, seeking insight from reliable biblical scholars and teachers, and allowing the text to shape our faith and practice.
