My people aske counsel at their stocks, and their staffe declareth vnto them: for the spirit of whordomes hath caused them to erre, and they haue gone a whoring from vnder their God. Hosea 4:12 (KJV)

Introduction:

In this verse the prophet Hosea confronts the people of Israel, exposing their misguided behavior and the dire consequences that follow. He begins with the striking statement, “My people ask counsel at their stocks, and their staff declareth unto them.” The term “stocks” refers to the wooden idols, stone pillars, or altars that the Israelites had erected for idolatrous worship. These objects were lifeless and incapable of offering true wisdom or guidance. The “staff” denotes a divination tool or the counsel of false prophets that were employed in pagan practices.

Instead of seeking direction from the living God, the nation turned to these inanimate objects and deceptive voices for advice. This reliance on idols and false prophecy is presented as a clear sign of their spiritual waywardness. The verse continues, “for the spirit of whoredoms hath caused them to err, and they have gone a whoring from under their God.” Here, “whoredoms” symbolizes spiritual infidelity—unfaithfulness to the covenant relationship with God. By embracing idolatry and pagan rites, the Israelites broke their bond with the Almighty and entered a state of moral and spiritual error.

Hosea emphasizes that this unfaithfulness has led the people away from the path of righteousness. Their abandonment of God has cut them off from His guidance, protection, and blessings, resulting in the loss of national prosperity and spiritual well‑being. The passage serves as a sobering reminder that reliance on false counsel and the worship of lifeless idols brings ruin, while true security and blessing are found only in faithful devotion to the living God.
