Jonah 3:2

Posted on 18 May at 14:53
Listen to this article

“Arise, go unto Nineveh, that great city, and preach unto it the preaching that I bid thee.”

Context:In the book of Jonah, we find the prophet Jonah receiving a second chance from God after initially disobeying His command to go to the city of Nineveh and deliver a message of judgment. Jonah was swallowed by a great fish and spent three days and nights in its belly. After being vomited out onto dry land, Jonah receives the same command from God again in Jonah 3:2.

Obedience:Jonah’s initial disobedience serves as a valuable lesson for us. When God speaks to us and gives us a task, it is important to obey Him promptly. In Jonah’s case, he had to go through a series of difficult circumstances to learn the importance of immediate obedience to God’s call. Sometimes, God may give us a second chance to fulfil His purposes, but it is always better to obey the first time.

Nineveh:Nineveh was the capital of the Assyrian Empire, known for its wickedness and idolatry. God’s decision to send Jonah to Nineveh demonstrates His compassion and desire for repentance, even for a city notorious for its sinfulness. This reveals God’s love for all people and His willingness to extend mercy and forgiveness when they turn to Him.

Preaching:God commanded Jonah to “preach unto [Nineveh] the preaching that I bid thee.” This emphasises the importance of delivering God’s message faithfully and without alteration. As believers, we are called to proclaim the Word of God with boldness and integrity, not diluting or distorting its truths. Jonah was given a specific message of judgment for Nineveh, and he had to deliver it as instructed.

Application:Jonah 3:2 teaches us several important lessons. First, we should strive for immediate obedience to God’s call. Delayed obedience can lead to unnecessary consequences. Second, God’s mercy and desire for repentance extend to all people, regardless of their past or present state. Third, as followers of Christ, we are called to faithfully deliver His message without compromise or alteration.
