Micah 1:1
“The word of the Lord that came to Micah the Morasthite in the days of Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah, which he saw concerning Samaria and Jerusalem.”
Historical Context:Micah was a prophet who lived during the 8th century BCE. He prophesied during the reigns of three kings of Judah: Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah. These were tumultuous times for the kingdom of Judah as well as the northern kingdom of Israel, with political unrest, idolatry, and social injustice prevalent. Micah’s message was primarily directed towards Samaria, the capital of Israel, and Jerusalem, the capital of Judah.
Micah’s prophecy begins by stating that it is the “word of the Lord” that came to him. This emphasizes the divine origin and authority of his message. Micah’s words are not his own; he speaks on behalf of God, carrying a message that God wants to communicate to His people.
Micah the Morasthite:Micah identifies himself as “Micah the Morasthite.” This refers to his place of origin, Moresheth-Gath, which was a town in the region of Judah. By stating his origin, Micah establishes his credibility and connects himself to the people he is addressing. It shows that he understands their experiences and can relate to their struggles.
Concerning Samaria and Jerusalem:Micah’s prophecy focuses on the cities of Samaria and Jerusalem. Samaria was the capital of the northern kingdom of Israel, while Jerusalem was the capital of the southern kingdom of Judah. Both cities held significant religious and political importance. Micah’s message encompasses both regions, addressing the people of Israel and Judah as a whole.
Key Themes:Although this verse is introductory, it sets the stage for the themes that will be explored throughout the book of Micah. These themes include social injustice, religious corruption, the consequences of sin, the judgment of God, and the hope of restoration. Micah’s prophecies contain strong condemnations against the sins of the people but also offer a message of hope and restoration through the promise of a coming Messiah.
