Micah 5:5

Listen to this article

“And this man shall be the peace, when the Assyrian shall come into our land: and when he shall tread in our palaces, then shall we raise against him seven shepherds, and eight principal men.”

Historical Context:Micah was a prophet in the 8th century BC, who prophesied during the reigns of Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah. He spoke against the injustice and idolatry prevalent in his society, and he also foretold the coming judgment upon Israel and Judah.

The Promise of Peace:In this verse, Micah speaks of a future ruler who will bring peace to the land when the Assyrians invade. The Assyrians were a powerful and ruthless empire that posed a significant threat to the nations around them, including Israel and Judah. Micah is providing hope to the people by assuring them that God will raise up a leader who will bring peace and deliverance in the midst of their turmoil.

The Identity of the Promised Ruler:Many scholars believe that this verse refers to the Messiah, Jesus Christ, who would come from the lineage of David. The mention of “this man” implies a specific person who will emerge as a source of peace in the face of the Assyrian invasion. Jesus, as the Prince of Peace (Isaiah 9:6), fulfills this prophecy.

The Assyrian Invasion:The Assyrian invasion was a significant event in Israel’s history. The Northern Kingdom of Israel had already fallen to the Assyrians, and Judah, the Southern Kingdom, was under threat. Micah predicts that when the Assyrians invade the land and enter their palaces, God will raise up seven shepherds and eight principal men to confront them. These numbers may represent completeness and sufficiency, indicating that God will provide more than enough leaders to resist the Assyrian invasion.

The Symbolism of Shepherds and Principal Men:The reference to seven shepherds and eight principal men can be understood metaphorically. Shepherds are known for leading and protecting their flocks, symbolizing leadership and guidance. Principal men refer to prominent or influential individuals who would provide wisdom and counsel. Together, these numbers suggest that God will provide abundant leadership and wisdom to defend against the Assyrian threat.

Application to Christians today:While this prophecy specifically addressed the historical context of the Assyrian invasion, it also carries broader spiritual implications. As believers, we face various challenges and trials in our lives. Micah 5:5 reminds us that God is our source of peace and deliverance, even in the midst of turmoil. Just as God raised up leaders in the past, He continues to provide guidance and wisdom through His Holy Spirit, who equips us to face and overcome the challenges that come our way.

In conclusion, Micah 5:5 highlights the promise of peace in the face of adversity and the assurance that God will raise up leaders to defend His people. Ultimately, this verse points to Jesus Christ as the ultimate source of peace and deliverance.
