Nahum 3:3

Posted on 18 May at 11:25

The horseman lifteth vp both the bright sword, & the glittering speare, and there is a multitude of slaine, and a great number of carkeises: and there is none ende of their corpses: they stumble vpon their corpses, Nahum 3:3 (KJV)

there is none end of

their corpses; they stumble upon their corpses: Nahum 3:3 (KJV)

Nahum 3:3 belongs to the book of Nahum, one of the Minor Prophets in the Old Testament. The verse paints a vivid picture of the destruction that God would bring upon the city of Nineveh, the capital of the Assyrian Empire.

Historical Context

The prophet Nahum announces God’s impending judgment against Nineveh, a nation notorious for its cruelty and oppression of God’s people, especially the Israelites. Though the Assyrian empire was powerful, Nahum’s message is one of comfort and hope for the Israelites, assuring them that God has not forgotten their suffering and will bring about the downfall of their oppressors.

Symbolism in the Verse

The imagery in Nahum 3:3 is striking. “The horseman” represents the attacking forces that execute divine judgment, while the “bright sword” and “glittering spear” symbolize the overwhelming military might of those forces. Some readers also see the reference to “young lions” as an additional picture of the ferocity of the Assyrian army. Both images convey the same reality: a relentless, powerful onslaught.

The phrase “a multitude of slain, and a great number of carcasses” depicts the massive loss of life, and “none end of their corpses; they stumble upon their corpses” emphasizes the sheer volume of death that creates chaos and stumbling among the survivors.

Spiritual Lessons

God’s justice and judgment are evident; He punishes evil and holds nations accountable for their actions. The passage also affirms God’s sovereignty—despite the Assyrians’ strength, He retains ultimate authority and will bring about their downfall according to His purposes. The destruction serves as a warning that persistent sin and wickedness have dire consequences. Finally, the message offers reassurance of God’s care for His people, encouraging believers to trust in His righteousness and to live according to His principles.

Overall, Nahum 3:3 provides a powerful image of divine judgment and the inevitable consequences of wickedness, urging readers to pursue righteousness and rely on God’s sovereign care.
