Zechariah 1:14

Posted on 18 May at 14:52
Listen to this article

“So the angel that communed with me said unto me, Cry thou, saying, Thus saith the LORD of hosts; I am jealous for Jerusalem and for Zion with a great jealousy.”

Context:So the angel that communed with me said unto me, Cry thou, saying, Thus saith the LORD of hosts; I am jealous for Jerusalem and for Zion with a great jealousy. Zechariah 1:14 (KJV)

In this verse, we find the prophet Zechariah receiving a message from an angel who had been communicating with him. The angel instructs Zechariah to proclaim a message to the people, declaring what the LORD of hosts has said. This message reveals the intense and passionate emotions of God towards Jerusalem and Zion.

The Angel’s Command:The verse begins with the angel commanding Zechariah to cry out or proclaim a message. The angel serves as an intermediary, relaying God’s message to the prophet. This emphasizes the significance and authority of the message being conveyed.

God’s Jealousy:The core message that the angel conveys to Zechariah is the declaration of God’s jealousy for Jerusalem and Zion. Jealousy, in this context, does not imply a negative or envious emotion but rather an intense zeal and protective love. It signifies God’s deep concern and affection for His chosen city and people.

Jerusalem and Zion:Jerusalem and Zion are synonymous and refer to the same place-the city of Jerusalem, particularly the location of the Temple mount, the spiritual and political center of ancient Israel. These were places of great significance to the Israelites as they represented the dwelling place of God among His people.

The LORD of Hosts:The title “LORD of hosts” highlights God’s authority, power, and sovereignty over all creation, including heavenly armies and earthly forces. It underscores the divine authority behind the message and the ability of God to fulfill His purposes.

This verse serves as an introduction to the subsequent messages delivered by Zechariah throughout the book. It establishes the themes of God’s passion for Jerusalem, His protective care for His people, and His sovereignty over all things.

In a broader context, Zechariah’s prophecies often pointed to the future restoration and glory of Jerusalem, the coming Messiah, and the ultimate establishment of God’s kingdom. This verse sets the stage for the subsequent messages, encouraging the people to recognize God’s deep love and commitment to Jerusalem and to respond accordingly.

By studying this verse and the entire book of Zechariah, we can gain insight into God’s heart for His people, His plans for the future, and the importance of remaining faithful to Him.
