Zechariah 7:2

“When they had sent unto the house of God Sherezer and Regem-melech, and their men, to pray before the LORD,”

Historical Context:The book of Zechariah is set during the time when the exiles from Judah were returning to Jerusalem after the Babylonian captivity. The temple was being rebuilt under the leadership of Zerubbabel, and Zechariah was a prophet who encouraged the people to remain faithful to God.

The Delegation’s Visit:In Zechariah 7:2, we see that a delegation consisting of Sherezer, Regemmelech, and their men was sent to the house of God to pray before the Lord. It’s important to note that this visit occurred during the fourth year of King Darius’ reign (Zechariah 7:1), which was approximately two years after Zechariah’s earlier prophecies.

Seeking God’s Guidance:The purpose of this delegation’s visit to the house of God was to seek the Lord’s guidance through prayer. The people wanted to know whether they should continue observing a particular fast that had been practiced during the exile in remembrance of the destruction of the temple (Zechariah 7:3-5).

God’s Response:In the following verses, God responds to the delegation’s inquiry by addressing the true essence of fasting and the obedience He desires from His people. He questions the motive behind their fasting, pointing out that their hearts were not focused on genuine devotion and righteousness (Zechariah 7:5-6).

The Message of True Obedience:Through Zechariah, God reminds the people of their ancestors’ disobedience, which led to their exile and the destruction of Jerusalem (Zechariah 7:7-14). He emphasizes that instead of ritualistic acts like fasting, He desires sincere obedience, justice, mercy, compassion, and care for the oppressed (Zechariah 7:9-10).

Application for Today:Zechariah 7:2 and the subsequent verses challenge us to examine the motives behind our religious practices. It reminds us that true obedience to God goes beyond mere rituals and external observances. God desires a genuine transformation of the heart that reflects in our actions toward others.

Lessons Learned:From this passage, we learn the importance of aligning our hearts and motives with God’s will. Our worship and devotion to God should not be reduced to empty rituals or legalistic practices. Instead, we are called to live lives characterized by justice, mercy, and compassion, treating others with love and respect.

In summary, Zechariah 7:2 highlights a delegation’s visit to the house of God to seek the Lord’s guidance. The subsequent verses emphasize the importance of genuine obedience and the true essence of worship, which goes beyond external acts and requires a transformed heart and a lifestyle characterized by justice, mercy, and compassion.
