Zechariah 8:3

Listen to this article

“Thus saith the LORD; I am returned unto Zion, and will dwell in the midst of Jerusalem: and Jerusalem shall be called a city of truth; and the mountain of the LORD of hosts the holy mountain.”

Historical Context:The book of Zechariah was written during the post-exilic period when the Israelites had returned from Babylonian captivity to rebuild Jerusalem and the temple. Zechariah was one of the prophets who encouraged the people in their restoration efforts and conveyed God’s messages to them.

God’s Presence and Restoration:In Zechariah 8:3, the Lord declares that He has returned to Zion, referring to His presence among His people. After the exile, God’s presence had departed from Jerusalem due to the people’s disobedience. This verse brings hope and reassurance to the Israelites that God has come back to dwell in their midst.

City of Truth:Jerusalem is described as a “city of truth” in this verse. This signifies that under God’s presence and guidance, Jerusalem will be a place where truth, righteousness, and justice prevail. It implies a restoration of moral integrity and fidelity to God’s commandments among the people.

The Holy Mountain:The mountain of the Lord of hosts is referred to as the holy mountain. This mountain represents the dwelling place of God and symbolizes His sovereignty and authority. It signifies the restoration of worship and the reestablishment of God’s rule over His people.

  • Zechariah 8:3 highlights the return of God’s presence to Jerusalem, indicating His favour and restoration upon His people.
  • The phrase “city of truth” emphasizes the importance of truth, righteousness, and justice in the life of the restored community.
  • The mention of the holy mountain signifies the reestablishment of worship and the recognition of God’s sovereignty.
  • As believers, we can find encouragement in the fact that God desires to dwell among His people. We can seek His presence and invite Him to be at the centre of our lives and communities.
  • The concept of a “city of truth” challenges us to live lives of integrity, honesty, and righteousness. We should strive to be people of truth and justice in our relationships, actions, and words.
  • Recognising God’s authority over our lives, we should submit to His rule and seek to honour Him in all areas of our existence.

Remember to consult other resources, such as commentaries and study Bibles, for a more comprehensive understanding of the verse and its context.
