Listen to this article

“And this shall be the plague wherewith the LORD will smite all the people that have fought against Jerusalem; Their flesh shall consume away while they stand upon their feet, and their eyes shall consume away in their holes, and their tongue shall consume away in their mouth.”

Historical Context:Zechariah was a prophet who lived during the post-exilic period when the Israelites were returning to Jerusalem after the Babylonian captivity. His prophecies mainly focus on the restoration of Jerusalem and the coming Messianic age.

Judgment against Jerusalem’s Enemies:Zechariah 14 contains prophecies about the future events surrounding Jerusalem and the ultimate victory of the Lord over all nations. In verse 12, it describes a specific judgment upon those who have fought against Jerusalem.

Symbolic Language:It’s important to note that Zechariah often uses poetic and symbolic language in his prophecies. The language used in verse 12 is highly symbolic, portraying the severe consequences that will come upon the enemies of Jerusalem. It emphasizes the utter destruction and defeat they will experience.

Divine Judgment:The verse speaks of a severe plague that will be inflicted by the Lord upon those who have opposed Jerusalem. The description of flesh consuming away, eyes consuming away in their holes, and tongues consuming away in their mouths depicts a devastating judgment and the complete physical decay of the individuals. This vivid language is meant to convey the intensity and totality of God’s judgment.

Symbolic Interpretation:Some scholars interpret this verse symbolically, understanding it to describe the spiritual consequences of opposing God’s chosen people. They argue that the description of physical decay symbolizes the moral and spiritual decay that results from opposing God’s purposes.

Eschatological Perspective:Another perspective sees this verse as part of a larger eschatological vision. It may refer to the final battle between the forces of evil and the Lord’s triumphant return. In this view, the language describes the ultimate defeat and destruction of those who oppose God’s kingdom.

Application:While the precise interpretation of this verse may vary, it serves as a reminder of God’s sovereignty, justice, and ultimate victory. It also highlights the seriousness of opposing God and His people. As believers, we are called to align ourselves with God’s purposes and seek His kingdom rather than opposing it.

  • It is essential to study the entire chapter of Zechariah 14 and consider various interpretations in light of other biblical passages to gain a comprehensive understanding of this prophecy.
  • Consulting commentaries and seeking the guidance of trusted spiritual leaders can further enrich the study.
