Listen to this article

“And it shall come to pass in that day, that a great tumult from the Lord shall be among them; and they shall lay hold everyone on the hand of his neighbor, and his hand shall rise up against the hand of his neighbor.”

Context:The book of Zechariah is one of the prophetic books in the Old Testament. It contains visions and prophecies given by the prophet Zechariah during the time of the Israelites’ return from Babylonian exile. Zechariah 14 specifically focuses on the future events surrounding the Day of the Lord and the establishment of God’s kingdom on earth.

The Day of the Lord:Zechariah 14 speaks about the Day of the Lord, a future time of divine judgment and restoration. It is a significant theme throughout the prophetic books, referring to a time when God will intervene in human history to bring judgment on the wicked and deliverance for His people.

A Great Tumult:Zechariah 14:13 describes a scene of chaos and confusion during the Day of the Lord. The phrase “a great tumult from the Lord” suggests a divine intervention, where God’s presence causes upheaval among the nations. This tumult represents the judgment and upheaval that will occur as God establishes His righteous rule.

Division and Conflict:The verse continues by saying, “they shall lay hold everyone on the hand of his neighbor, and his hand shall rise up against the hand of his neighbor.” This imagery suggests a state of disunity and conflict among people. In the midst of the chaos, even neighbors will turn against one another.

Symbolic Meaning:This verse is not meant to be taken literally but rather symbolically. It portrays the disruption and confusion that will accompany the Day of the Lord. It highlights the severe judgment of God upon the ungodly and the resulting social upheaval.

Application:While Zechariah 14:13 primarily speaks of events that will occur during the Day of the Lord, it also reminds us of the importance of unity and peace in our lives today. As Christians, we are called to love our neighbours and strive for unity within the body of Christ. This verse serves as a reminder to uphold these values and avoid conflicts and divisions among believers.

  • In conclusion:Zechariah 14:13 describes a scene of tumult and division during the Day of the Lord, symbolising the judgment and upheaval that will occur when God establishes His kingdom. It serves as a reminder of the importance of unity and peace in our lives, urging us to love our neighbours and strive for harmony among believers.
