Malachi 1:12

Listen to this article

“But ye have profaned it, in that ye say, The table of the LORD is polluted; and the fruit thereof, even his meat, is contemptible.”

Malachi 1:12 is part of a prophetic message delivered by the prophet Malachi to the people of Israel. In this verse, Malachi addresses the priests who were neglecting their duties and offering unacceptable sacrifices in the temple.

Historical Context:During the time of Malachi, the Israelites had returned from exile in Babylon and had rebuilt the temple in Jerusalem. However, they had fallen into a state of spiritual apathy and were not wholeheartedly worshiping God. The priests, in particular, were responsible for maintaining the spiritual integrity of the temple worship.

  • Profaning the Table of the Lord:

The phrase “ye have profaned it” refers to the priests’ dishonorable treatment of the sacrifices and offerings brought to the temple. Instead of offering their best to God, they were offering blemished and inferior animals for sacrifice. This act demonstrated a lack of reverence and honor for God.

Polluted Table and Contemptible Fruit:The priests were accused of saying, “The table of the LORD is polluted, and the fruit thereof, even his meat, is contemptible.” This statement suggests that the priests regarded the altar and the offerings brought to it as unworthy of their attention or respect. They treated the sacred offerings with disdain and regarded them as insignificant, defiling the sanctity of the worship.

Lessons and Applications:

  • Reverence and Honor:Malachi’s message reminds us of the importance of approaching God with reverence and honor. We are called to offer our best to God in all aspects of our lives, not just in our physical sacrifices but also in our attitudes, thoughts, and actions.
  • Giving God Our First Fruits:The priests’ disregard for the quality of their sacrifices serves as a reminder for us to give God our first and best. This principle extends beyond physical offerings to our time, talents, and resources. God deserves our utmost dedication and devotion.
  • Avoiding Spiritual Apathy:The Israelites had become spiritually complacent and lacked genuine passion for worshiping God. This verse serves as a warning against apathy in our relationship with God. We should constantly examine our hearts to ensure that our love and devotion to God remain fervent.
  • Integrity in Worship:The priests’ behavior compromised the integrity of their worship. As followers of God, we should strive for integrity in our worship, offering sincere adoration and seeking to honor God in all that we do.

In conclusion, Malachi 1:12 highlights the need for reverence, honor, and integrity in our worship of God. It reminds us to give God our best, both in physical offerings and in the attitudes of our hearts. By understanding the historical context and applying the lessons from this verse, we can deepen our relationship with God and cultivate a genuine spirit of worship.
