Matthew 5:15

Neither doe men light a candle, and put it vnder a bushell: but on a candlesticke, and it giueth light vnto all that are in the house. Matthew 5:15 (KJV)

The verse belongs to Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount, placed after the Beatitudes and forming part of His instruction on righteous living and the kingdom of heaven. In this teaching Jesus uses the metaphor of a candle to convey a deeper spiritual truth. The candle represents the light of the gospel and the good works of believers that should be evident to the world.

Light is repeatedly associated with truth, goodness, and revelation. Jesus Himself is called the “Light of the world” (John 8:12), and as His followers we are called to reflect His light and illuminate the darkness around us. He contrasts two ways of using light: a bushel—a grain‑measuring container—would hide the candle’s illumination and diminish its effectiveness, whereas a candlestick lifts the candle, allowing its light to shine on everyone in the house.

The metaphor highlights the importance of not hiding or suppressing our faith. Our lives, actions, and words should openly display the love and truth of Christ so that others can see. By placing the candle on a candlestick, the light becomes accessible to all in the house; likewise believers are urged to let their light shine before others (see Matthew 5:16), living out faith in a way that draws attention to God’s glory and goodness.

The light we share has a positive impact on those around us. It can expose darkness, provide guidance, and bring hope and comfort to the lost or needy. Such illumination can inspire others to seek God and experience His love and salvation.

The verse also calls us to be intentional. Being a light in the world requires purposeful action—actively seeking opportunities to shine through acts of kindness, compassion, forgiveness, and sharing the gospel. Reflect on how you are currently letting your light shine. Are there areas where you have been hiding or minimizing your faith? Consider how you can be more intentional in daily life.

Prayerfully ask God to help you boldly shine His light, granting wisdom, courage, and opportunities to share the gospel effectively and be a positive influence in your community. Remember, Jesus’ teaching in Matthew 5:15 encourages us not to hide our faith but to let it shine brightly for the glory of God and the benefit of others.
