Matthew 10:33

Listen to this article

“But whosoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before my Father which is in heaven.”

Context:Matthew 10 is part of Jesus’ commissioning of the twelve disciples and giving them specific instructions for their mission to preach the gospel and heal the sick. In this particular verse, Jesus is emphasising the importance of confessing Him before others and the consequences of denying Him.

Denying Jesus:Denying Jesus can take various forms. It can include renouncing one’s faith in Jesus, refusing to acknowledge Him as Lord and Saviour, or disowning Him when faced with opposition or persecution. Essentially, it involves rejecting Jesus and His teachings.

Confessing Jesus:On the contrary, confessing Jesus means openly acknowledging Him as Lord and Saviour, publicly proclaiming one’s faith in Him, and living a life that reflects His teachings and example. It involves boldly standing up for Jesus, even in the face of opposition or persecution.

Jesus’ response:The verse highlights the reciprocal nature of our relationship with Jesus. If we deny Him before others, He will also deny us before His Father in heaven. This statement emphasises the seriousness of our commitment to Jesus and the eternal consequences of our choices.

The significance of Jesus denying us:Jesus’ denial of those who deny Him does not imply that He will cease to be our Saviour, but rather it refers to the denial of intimate fellowship and acceptance before God the Father. It means being disowned or disavowed by Jesus in the presence of God.

Lessons and Application:

  • Faithfulness and courage:This verse underscores the importance of remaining faithful to Jesus and having the courage to openly acknowledge Him, regardless of the circumstances. Our loyalty to Christ should be unwavering, even in the face of opposition or persecution.
  • Counting the cost:Following Jesus comes with a cost, and we must be prepared to bear it. We should consider whether we are willing to bear the consequences of openly confessing Jesus before others, recognising that denying Him has eternal consequences.
  • Authenticity and integrity:This verse challenges us to examine our hearts and ensure that our confession of faith aligns with our actions. It urges us to live lives that consistently reflect our faith in Jesus, both in public and private.
  • Trusting in Jesus’ intercession:While the verse warns of the consequences of denying Jesus, we can find hope in Jesus’ role as our mediator. We can trust in His intercession and seek forgiveness and restoration when we stumble or fall short.

Remember, this verse should be understood in light of the overall message of the Gospel, which emphasises God’s grace, forgiveness, and the invitation to repentance. It is an invitation to faithfully follow Jesus and embrace the eternal life He offers.
