Matthew 13:10

Posted on 18 May at 14:50

“And the disciples came, and said unto him, Why speakest thou unto them in parables?”

Context:Understanding the context of a Bible verse is important. In Matthew 13, Jesus is teaching a series of parables to the crowds who have gathered to hear Him. This particular verse is part of a dialogue between Jesus and His disciples.

The Disciples’ Question:The disciples approach Jesus and ask Him why He speaks to the people in parables. This question reveals their confusion and desire for clarification. They want to understand why Jesus chooses to teach in parables instead of using more straightforward methods.

The Purpose of Parables:Jesus responds to the disciples’ question in the subsequent verses (Matthew 13:11-17). He explains that He speaks to the crowds in parables to convey spiritual truths in a way that is both engaging and thought-provoking. Parables use familiar illustrations from everyday life to convey deeper spiritual concepts.

Revealing Truth to Some, Concealing It from Others:In Jesus’ response to the disciples, He quotes Isaiah 6:9-10, stating that the use of parables fulfills the prophecy. Parables serve a dual purpose: they both reveal truth to those with open hearts and ears to hear and also conceal truth from those who have hardened their hearts and refused to accept it.

Seeking Understanding:Jesus continues in Matthew 13:12, saying, “For whosoever hath, to him shall be given, and he shall have more abundance: but whosoever hath not, from him shall be taken away even that he hath.” This statement emphasizes the importance of seeking understanding and having a receptive heart. Those who earnestly seek the truth and respond to Jesus’ teachings with faith will receive more knowledge and insight. On the other hand, those who reject or disregard the truth will lose even what little understanding they may have had.

Spiritual Insight:Jesus goes on to explain the parable of the sower and its meaning in Matthew 13:18-23. He highlights the importance of understanding the Word of God and how it takes root in different people’s hearts, with varying results. The parables serve to reveal spiritual truths to those who are genuinely seeking and responsive.

Application:The disciples’ question and Jesus’ response remind us of the importance of having an open and receptive heart to receive the teachings of Jesus. It challenges us to seek understanding, to be willing to dig deeper into the truths of God’s Word, and to respond to them with faith and obedience.
