Matthew 13:23

Posted on 18 May at 14:50

“But he that received seed into the good ground is he that heareth the word, and understandeth it; which also beareth fruit, and bringeth forth, some an hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty.”

In this passage, Jesus is speaking in a parable known as the Parable of the Sower. This parable describes different types of soil and the corresponding responses to the seed that is sown.

The Seed:The seed represents the word of God, the message of the Gospel, or the teachings of Jesus. It is the truth that is sown into the hearts of people.

The Good Ground:In this verse, Jesus specifically focuses on the good ground. The good ground refers to those who hear the word of God, understand it, and receive it with a receptive heart.

Hearing the Word:The first step in receiving the word is to hear it. It implies actively listening to the message of God and being open to receiving it.

Understanding the Word:The second step is to understand the word. This goes beyond mere hearing. It involves comprehending the message, discerning its meaning, and grasping its significance.

Bearing Fruit:The result of receiving the word and understanding it is bearing fruit. Bearing fruit refers to the transformation that takes place in the life of a believer, producing good works, righteous character, and spiritual growth.

Different Levels of Fruitfulness:Jesus highlights that the fruitfulness of the good ground may vary. Some may bear fruit a hundredfold, some sixty, and some thirty. This signifies that the impact and effectiveness of the Gospel message can vary in different individuals’ lives. It is not a measure of comparison but emphasizes the diversity of responses and the faithfulness of individuals in their discipleship.

Overall, Matthew 13:23 emphasizes the importance of receiving and understanding the word of God with an open and receptive heart. It calls us to not only listen to God’s message but to internalize it, allowing it to take root in our lives and bear fruit. This fruitfulness is not uniform but is a personal response to the transformative power of God’s word.

As you continue your study, it can be beneficial to explore the preceding and following verses, as well as the broader context of the Parable of the Sower, to gain a deeper understanding of the message Jesus conveyed through this parable.
