Matthew 16:2

Posted on 18 May at 14:18

“He answered and said unto them, When it is evening, ye say, It will be fair weather: for the sky is red.”

Context:This verse is part of a larger passage where Jesus engages in a discussion with the Pharisees and Sadducees, who were seeking a sign from Him to test Him.

In this passage, Jesus rebukes them for their lack of discernment and their failure to recognize the signs of the times.

Here, Jesus points out a common observation made by people regarding weather patterns.

In the evening, when the sky turns red, it often indicates fair weather the next day.

Jesus draws attention to this natural phenomenon to make a broader spiritual point.

In the following verses (Matthew 16:3-4), Jesus admonishes the religious leaders for their inability to interpret the signs of the times, comparing their lack of understanding to their ability to discern the weather.

He then states that an evil and adulterous generation seeks after a sign, indicating that their request for a sign is driven by unbelief.

The primary lesson we can draw from this passage is the importance of spiritual discernment and understanding the signs of the times.

Just as people can observe and interpret natural signs to anticipate weather conditions, Jesus expects His followers to discern the spiritual signs and understand the times in which they live.

This passage also emphasises the danger of seeking signs as a condition for belief.

Jesus desires genuine faith and a recognition of His identity based on His teachings, His miracles, and the fulfilment of prophecy, rather than merely looking for miraculous signs.
