Matthew 16:4

A wicked and adulterous generation seeketh after a signe, and there shall no signe be giuen vnto it, but the signe of the Prophet Ionas. And hee left them, and departed. Matthew 16:4 (KJV)

This verse is part of a conversation between Jesus and the Pharisees and Sadducees who came to test him and seek a sign from heaven. Let’s break down the verse and explore its meaning:

“A wicked and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign”: Jesus begins by addressing the character of the people who are seeking a sign. Here, He describes them as wicked and adulterous. This phrase points to their spiritual condition and moral corruption. The word “adulterous” can be understood both literally, referring to the violation of marital fidelity, and metaphorically, indicating spiritual unfaithfulness or idolatry. Jesus is emphasising that their hearts are not in the right place, and they are not genuinely seeking after God.

“And there shall no sign be given unto it”: Jesus states that no sign will be given to this generation. It implies that seeking a sign without genuine faith or sincerity is inappropriate. Jesus does not cater to their demand for a miraculous display because their hearts are not aligned with God.

“But the sign of the prophet Jonas”: Instead of giving them a sign, Jesus points to the sign of Jonah as the only sign they will receive. He refers to the story of Jonah in the Old Testament where Jonah was swallowed by a great fish and spent three days and three nights in its belly before being vomited out onto dry land. Jesus later connects this sign to His own death, burial, and resurrection after three days.

“And he left them, and departed”: After making His point, Jesus leaves the Pharisees and Sadducees. This shows His refusal to engage in empty arguments or perform miracles for the sake of satisfying sceptics. Jesus demonstrates that His mission is not to cater to people’s desires for signs, but to reveal the truth and offer salvation to those who genuinely seek Him. The verse highlights the importance of having genuine faith and seeking God with a sincere heart. Jesus encourages His followers to seek Him, not for signs or miracles, but because of who He is and what He offers—eternal life and reconciliation with God through His death and resurrection.
