Matthew 17:14

“And when they were come to the multitude, there came to him a certain man, kneeling down to him, and saying,”

Context:Matthew 17:14-21 records an incident where a man brings his demon-possessed son to Jesus seeking help. The disciples had attempted to cast out the demon but were unsuccessful. Frustrated and desperate, the man approaches Jesus for assistance.

The desperate man had seen the disciples’ inability to help his son, and now he turns to Jesus, recognizing His authority and power. This teaches us the importance of coming to Jesus with humility and acknowledging His sovereignty over our circumstances.

This passage highlights the limitations of the disciples’ faith and power. They had been given authority to cast out demons earlier, yet here they failed. It demonstrates that even the disciples, who had been following Jesus closely, had much to learn about faith and dependence on God.

In Matthew 17:20, Jesus responds to the disciples’ question about their failure to cast out the demon. He tells them, “Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place, and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you.” Jesus emphasizes the importance of faith in accomplishing the work of God.

In verse 21, Jesus states, “Howbeit this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting.” Some manuscripts do not include this verse, but it has been widely accepted as an authentic saying of Jesus. It implies that certain spiritual battles require a deeper level of devotion and spiritual discipline.

• Humility and dependence:Like the desperate man, we should approach Jesus with humility and acknowledge His authority over our lives. Recognize that we cannot solve every problem on our own but need to rely on Christ’s power and wisdom.
• Faith and belief:Jesus teaches us that faith, even as small as a mustard seed, is sufficient to move mountains. Cultivate a vibrant, growing faith through prayer, studying God’s Word, and trusting in His promises.
• Prayer and fasting:Engage in regular prayer and fasting to deepen your relationship with God and draw closer to Him. Seek His guidance, strength, and intervention in challenging situations.
• Learning from failures:Just as the disciples experienced failure in this passage, we too may encounter setbacks and disappointments. Instead of losing hope, let these experiences drive you to seek a deeper understanding of God’s ways, grow in faith, and rely more fully on His power.
