Matthew 17:17

“Then Jesus answered and said, O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you? how long shall I suffer you? bring him hither to me.”

Context:And when they were come to the multitude, there came to him a certain man, kneeling down to him, and saying, Lord, have mercy on my son: for he is lunatick, and sore vexed: for ofttimes he falleth into the fire, and oft into the water. And I brought him to thy disciples, and they could not cure him (Matthew 17:14-16, KJV).

Here, a man approaches Jesus, seeking help for his son who is afflicted with a demonic spirit. The man had brought his son to Jesus’ disciples, but they were unable to heal him. Frustrated by their inability, the man turns to Jesus for assistance.

Faithlessness and Perversity:Jesus’ response starts with the words, "O faithless and perverse generation." Jesus is addressing not only the disciples but also the entire generation of people who lacked faith. The disciples’ inability to heal the boy was indicative of their lack of faith in the power and authority given to them by Jesus. Jesus expected them to exercise their faith and rely on Him to perform miracles.

Jesus’ Suffering and Duration:Jesus further asks, "How long shall I be with you? How long shall I suffer you?" This statement expresses Jesus’ weariness and frustration with the people’s persistent unbelief and their reliance on Him instead of taking personal responsibility for their faith. It also hints at the fact that Jesus’ time on earth was limited, and the people needed to seize the opportunity to believe in Him and witness His ministry.

Bring Him Hither to Me:Despite His disappointment, Jesus responds to the situation with compassion and authority. He instructs the man to bring his son to Him, affirming that He is the source of healing and deliverance. • c. The Compassion of Jesus:Despite the frustration expressed in His words, Jesus demonstrates compassion by healing the boy. He is always ready to help those who come to Him in faith, even in the face of human limitations and unbelief.
