Matthew 18:2

Posted on 18 May at 14:50
Listen to this article

“Jesus called a little child unto him and set him in the midst of them.”

Context:To gain a better understanding of the verse, it’s helpful to consider its surrounding context. Matthew 18 begins with the disciples asking Jesus, “Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?” (Matthew 18:1, KJV). In response, Jesus presents a powerful lesson using a child as an illustration.

Symbolism of the Child:Jesus calls a little child to stand among the disciples. Children are often seen as symbols of innocence, humility, and dependency. Jesus frequently emphasized the qualities of humility and childlike faith throughout His teachings. By placing a child in their midst, He illustrates the characteristics that are esteemed in the Kingdom of Heaven.

Humility:In the cultural context of that time, children were often considered insignificant and had low social status. By bringing a child forward, Jesus is teaching His disciples the importance of humility. He challenges their preconceived notions of greatness and highlights the need for humility to enter the Kingdom of Heaven.

Childlike Faith:Children are known for their trust, simplicity, and dependence on adults. Jesus calls His disciples to have childlike faith, emphasizing the need for complete trust and reliance on God. This contrasts with the disciples’ desire for prominence and self-importance.

Lesson on Greatness:By using a child as an example, Jesus teaches that greatness in the Kingdom of Heaven is not based on societal status, wealth, or power. Rather, it is about having a humble heart, trusting God wholeheartedly, and relying on Him for guidance and provision.

Application:This verse prompts us to reflect on our own attitudes and priorities. Are we seeking recognition and status, or are we humbly submitting ourselves to God? Jesus invites us to approach Him with childlike faith, acknowledging our need for His guidance and embracing a humble posture.
