Matthew 19:5

Listen to this article

“And said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh?”

Marriage as a Divine Union:Jesus emphasizes the sacredness and permanence of the marital relationship. The use of the term “cleave” suggests a deep bond, indicating that a husband and wife should be joined together in a committed, inseparable union. This union is not merely a legal or social contract but a spiritual and emotional connection ordained by God.

Leaving and Cleaving:The verse also highlights the priority of the marital relationship over the ties to one’s parents. It signifies the transition from the dependence of childhood to the establishment of a new family unit. It does not imply a complete abandonment of parents, but rather a shift in primary allegiance and responsibility.

Oneness in Marriage:The phrase “they twain shall be one flesh” underscores the unity and intimacy that marriage entails. It speaks to the profound union of heart, mind, and body that is intended for a husband and wife. This unity extends beyond physical intimacy to encompass emotional, spiritual, and relational oneness.

By referencing this verse, Jesus affirms God’s original design and intention for marriage, which is the lifelong commitment between one man and one woman. It emphasizes the importance of leaving behind previous familial attachments and embracing the unique bond between husband and wife.

It is worth noting that while this verse speaks to the ideal of marriage, the Bible also recognizes the brokenness of humanity and provides guidance for dealing with issues like divorce and remarriage in other passages. However, the specific focus of Matthew 19:5 is on the divine plan for marriage as established by God.
