Matthew 20:9

Posted on 18 May at 14:50

“And when they came that were hired about the eleventh hour, they received every man a penny.”

Certainly! Let’s delve into a Bible study on Matthew 20:9 (KJV) states: "And when they came that were hired about the eleventh hour, they received every man a penny."

This verse is part of a parable known as the Parable of the Workers in the Vineyard, which Jesus shared with His disciples to illustrate important spiritual principles. In this parable, a landowner hires laborers at different hours of the day to work in his vineyard. The parable reveals God’s grace, generosity, and the concept of equality in the kingdom of heaven.

Here are a few key points to consider in this Bible study:

God’s Generosity:The landowner represents God in this parable. He goes out several times during the day, starting early in the morning, to hire workers for his vineyard. This demonstrates God’s continuous pursuit of people to invite them into His kingdom and the work He has for them. It highlights God’s willingness to include everyone and give them opportunities to serve Him.

The Workers at Different Hours:The parable mentions workers being hired at different hours, including those hired “about the eleventh hour.” These workers represent individuals who come to faith in Jesus Christ at various stages of their lives. The eleventh-hour workers symbolize those who may have lived most of their lives apart from God but still receive the same reward and blessings as those who have served Him for a longer time. It illustrates God’s grace and mercy, showing that it’s never too late to enter into a relationship with Him and experience His blessings.

Equality in the Kingdom:Despite the differences in the amount of time they worked, the landowner pays each worker a denarius, which was a fair day’s wage at the time. This equal payment signifies that God’s rewards are not based on human standards of merit or length of service but on His graciousness. In God’s kingdom, there is no favouritism or discrimination. All believers, regardless of their background or how long they have served, receive the same inheritance and eternal life through faith in Jesus Christ.

The Worldly Perspective:The parable also addresses the reaction of the workers who were hired early in the day. They grumbled against the landowner, feeling that they deserved more because they worked longer. This response highlights a human tendency to compare and measure worth based on personal effort. Jesus uses this part of the parable to challenge the disciples’ and our own understanding of God’s grace and fairness. It teaches us to avoid comparing ourselves with others and to rejoice in the blessings and opportunities God has given us individually.

In summary, Matthew 20:9 and the Parable of the Workers in the Vineyard remind us of God’s abundant grace, His willingness to embrace individuals at any stage of life, and the equality of His rewards in the kingdom of heaven. It teaches us to appreciate and celebrate the goodness of God rather than comparing ourselves to others.
