Listen to this article

“Then spake Jesus to the multitude, and to his disciples.”

Context:Matthew 23 is a chapter in the Gospel of Matthew where Jesus delivers a series of strong rebukes and warnings to the scribes and Pharisees. In this chapter, Jesus confronts their hypocrisy and exposes their self-righteousness.

Historical Context:The scribes and Pharisees were religious leaders during Jesus’ time who held significant influence over the people.

  • They were experts in the Mosaic Law and were responsible for teaching and interpreting it to the Jewish community.
  • However, many of them had deviated from the true intent of the Law and focused more on outward displays of piety rather than genuine faith and obedience to God.
  • Jesus’ Address to the Multitude and His Disciples:
  • Jesus begins His discourse by addressing the multitude, which refers to the larger crowd of people who were following Him.
  • He also directs His words specifically to His disciples, those who had chosen to follow Him closely and learn from Him.
  • This indicates that Jesus intended His message to reach a wide audience, both the common people and His closest followers.
  • Importance of Jesus’ Message:
  • By speaking to the multitude and His disciples, Jesus highlights the widespread influence and impact of the scribes and Pharisees.
  • Jesus wanted to warn the people about the religious leaders’ hypocrisy and false teachings, emphasizing the importance of discernment and genuine faith.
  • His message served to expose the hypocrisy of the religious elite and to provide a contrast between their practices and the true heart of God’s commandments.

Lessons for Today:

  • Jesus’ message in Matthew 23:serves as a reminder for believers today to prioritize genuine faith and a sincere relationship with God over outward displays of religiosity.
  • It encourages us to be discerning and not blindly follow religious leaders or traditions without testing them against the teachings of Jesus and the principles of God’s Word.
  • It reminds us that our focus should be on the condition of our hearts and our obedience to God rather than seeking recognition or honor from others.

Application:

  • Take time to reflect on your own motives and actions. Are you seeking to please God and live according to His Word, or are you more concerned about appearances and the opinions of others?
  • Study the teachings of Jesus and the principles of the Bible for yourself, ensuring that your beliefs align with God’s truth.
  • Be discerning in following spiritual leaders, testing their teachings against the Scriptures and seeking leaders who exemplify humility, integrity, and a genuine love for God and others.

Remember, the context and teachings of the Bible are rich and multifaceted. This study provides a starting point, but further exploration and discussion of Matthew 23 and its surrounding passages can yield deeper insights into Jesus’ teachings and their relevance for our lives today.
