Matthew 24:12

“And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold.”

Context:Matthew 24 is known as the Olivet Discourse, where Jesus speaks to His disciples about the signs of the end times and His second coming. In this specific verse, Jesus is describing the conditions that will prevail before His return.

Iniquity shall abound:The word “iniquity” refers to wickedness, lawlessness, or sin. Jesus predicts that as the end times approach, sin will increase and become more widespread. It implies a time of moral decay, rebellion against God’s standards, and an increase in unrighteousness.

The love of many shall wax cold:Jesus also foretells that as sin abounds, the love of many will grow cold. This can be understood as a spiritual and relational coldness, a lack of genuine love, compassion, and care towards others. It suggests a decline in love for God and for one another.

Spiritual implications:The verse highlights the spiritual condition of people in the last days. As sin proliferates, hearts will become hardened, leading to a loss of fervent love for God and fellow human beings. This spiritual coldness can manifest as apathy, indifference, selfishness, and a lack of empathy.

End-time application:Matthew 24:12 serves as a warning and a reminder for believers to remain vigilant and faithful amidst increasing immorality and wickedness. It challenges us to evaluate our own hearts and ensure that our love for God and others remains fervent, even in the midst of challenging times.

Counteracting coldness:In response to the increasing iniquity and cooling of love, believers are called to actively cultivate and demonstrate genuine love. This can be done through prayer, studying God’s Word, engaging in acts of kindness, pursuing righteousness, and seeking the guidance and empowerment of the Holy Spirit.

The ultimate source of love:While human love can falter, God’s love is unwavering. As we draw closer to God and experience His love, we are equipped to love others selflessly and unconditionally. Therefore, deepening our relationship with God and relying on His grace and love is vital in combating the coldness of heart.

Hope and encouragement:Despite the prevailing conditions described in Matthew 24:12, the ultimate hope for believers lies in the assurance of Christ’s return. Jesus’ words serve as a reminder that His coming will bring an end to sin, restore all things, and establish a reign of righteousness and love.

In conclusion, Matthew 24:12 highlights the increasing iniquity and the consequent cooling of love as signs of the end times. It challenges believers to guard their hearts, actively demonstrate genuine love, and find hope in the promise of Christ’s return. By relying on God’s love and grace, we can counteract the coldness of heart and remain faithful in the midst of a world filled with sin.
