Matthew 25:9

Listen to this article

“But the wise answered, saying, Not so; lest there be not enough for us and you: but go ye rather to them that sell, and buy for yourselves.”

Context:Matthew 25 is part of Jesus’ teaching known as the Parable of the Ten Virgins. In this parable, Jesus uses the story of ten virgins waiting for a bridegroom to arrive to teach about the importance of readiness and preparedness for His second coming.

The Setting:The parable begins by describing ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom. Five of them were wise and five were foolish. The wise virgins took extra oil for their lamps, while the foolish virgins did not.

The Response of the Wise Virgins:In verse 9, the bridegroom finally arrives, and the wise virgins, who had prepared themselves by bringing extra oil, were ready. The foolish virgins, realizing that their lamps were going out, asked the wise virgins to share their oil. However, the wise virgins replied, “Not so; lest there be not enough for us and you: but go ye rather to them that sell, and buy for yourselves.”

Spiritual Meaning:The Parable of the Ten Virgins teaches us several important spiritual lessons:

  • a) Readiness and Preparedness: The wise virgins symbolize those who are spiritually prepared for the second coming of Christ. They represent believers who are vigilant, watchful, and prepared for His return.
  • b) The Importance of Personal Responsibility: The wise virgins’ response highlights the principle of personal responsibility in matters of faith. Each person is responsible for their own spiritual preparedness and cannot rely solely on others.
  • c) Limited Opportunity: The wise virgins’ refusal to share their oil indicates that there are limits to the opportunities for salvation. Once the bridegroom arrives, the door is shut, and those who are unprepared will be left outside.
  • d) Urgency and Diligence: The wise virgins’ advice to the foolish virgins to go and buy oil emphasizes the urgency and diligence required in our spiritual lives. We must actively seek God, grow in faith, and be prepared for His return.

Application:Matthew 25:9 calls us to examine our own spiritual preparedness and readiness for the return of Christ. Are we diligently seeking God, growing in our faith, and being watchful for His coming? It reminds us that we cannot rely on others for our personal relationship with God, but we must take responsibility for our own faith journey.
