Mark 4:10

Posted on 18 May at 14:48

“And when he was alone, they that were about him with the twelve asked of him the parable.”

Context:The verse is part of a larger passage known as the Parable of the Sower (Mark 4:1-20). In this parable, Jesus teaches the crowds using agricultural imagery to convey spiritual truths about the kingdom of God.

Seeking Understanding:After Jesus finishes speaking in parables to the crowds, He is alone with His disciples. Those who were with Him, including the twelve disciples, approach Him seeking an explanation of the parable. They desire to understand the deeper meaning behind the story Jesus had just shared with the crowds.

Disciples’ Privileged Access:The disciples had the privilege of being in Jesus’ close company and had the opportunity to ask Him for clarification and further instruction. They recognised that Jesus possessed unique insights into spiritual matters, and they sought to deepen their understanding through direct interaction with Him.

Importance of Parables:Parables were a significant teaching tool used by Jesus to convey spiritual truths in a relatable and memorable manner. They employed common scenarios from daily life to illustrate profound spiritual principles. However, the parables required careful contemplation and a willingness to seek further understanding, as their meaning was often veiled to those who were not genuinely seeking truth.

Revealing Spiritual Truths:The disciples’ request for an explanation of the parable reveals their desire to grasp the spiritual truths Jesus intended to convey. Jesus proceeds to explain the parable to them, emphasising the importance of understanding the parable as a key to comprehending all other parables (Mark 4:13).

Application for Believers:The disciples’ example teaches us the significance of seeking understanding and wisdom from Jesus. It is essential for believers to approach the Word of God humbly, recognising that there may be aspects of His teachings that require further illumination. Through prayer, study, and seeking the guidance of the Holy Spirit, believers can deepen their understanding of God’s truth.

The Role of the Holy Spirit:Just as the disciples sought Jesus’ explanation, believers today can rely on the Holy Spirit to guide them into all truth (John 16:13). The Holy Spirit provides insight and illumination, enabling believers to comprehend the deeper spiritual meanings found in the Scriptures.
