Mark 6:19

Therefore Herodias had a quarrel against him, and would have killed him; but she could not:

Mark 6:19 (KJV)

This verse belongs to the account of John the Baptist’s imprisonment and death. In the preceding verses, Herod Antipas, the tetrarch of Galilee, had taken Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife, as his own. John publicly and repeatedly told Herod, “It is not lawful for thee to have thy brother’s wife.” That direct rebuke of an unlawful marriage is the stated cause of Herodias’s hostility.

The word “therefore” links Herodias’s quarrel directly to John’s condemnation. Her “quarrel” was more than a passing disagreement; it was an inward grudge, settled anger, and hatred that made her an adversary to John. She wanted him dead, but she could not carry out her plan because Herod restrained her. Mark 6:20 explains that Herod feared John, protected him, and knew him to be a righteous and holy man, and that Herod liked to listen to him. Herodias’s inability to kill John was not a change of heart but a restraint imposed by Herod’s respect for John.

Luke 3:19-20 gives a parallel account of John’s rebuke of Herod and Herod’s subsequent imprisonment of John, confirming the historical event and its cause. The tension in Mark 6:19 sets the stage for the later opportunity Herodias seizes in Mark 6:21-28.

Several lessons emerge. First, speaking truth can bring opposition: John fearlessly confronted sin, and he faced persecution. Believers are reminded that standing for what is right may lead to adversity, yet faithfulness to truth remains essential. Second, conviction can affect even those in power: Herod recognized John as righteous and holy and, despite his conflict, protected him. Third, harboring resentment is destructive: Herodias’s deep grudge clouded her judgment and led her to contemplate murder, showing the danger of bitterness and the need for forgiveness. Finally, divine protection is real: God’s providence worked through Herod’s delay to preserve John until the appointed time, showing that God can safeguard His faithful servants and fulfill His purposes.

Mark 6:19 reveals the tense relationship between Herodias and John the Baptist, and it calls believers to remain faithful to God’s truth even amid opposition and to trust in His providential care.
