Mark 9:8

Posted on 18 May at 14:46
Listen to this article

“And suddenly, when they had looked round about, they saw no man any more, save Jesus only with themselves.”

Context:Mark 9:8 is a part of the account of the Transfiguration of Jesus Christ. In this event, Jesus took Peter, James, and John up on a high mountain, where He was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and His clothes became radiant white. Along with Jesus, Moses and Elijah also appeared, talking with Him. Peter suggested building three tabernacles for Jesus, Moses, and Elijah, not knowing what to say. Then, a cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my beloved Son, listen to Him.” After the voice spoke, Moses and Elijah disappeared, and the disciples saw only Jesus.

Importance of the Transfiguration:The Transfiguration was a significant event that revealed Jesus’ divine glory and confirmed His identity as the Son of God. It provided a glimpse of His heavenly glory and served as a confirmation to the disciples of His true nature. The presence of Moses and Elijah represented the Law and the Prophets, indicating Jesus’ fulfilment of the Old Testament prophecies and His superiority over them. The voice from the cloud affirmed Jesus’ authority and instructed the disciples to listen to Him.

“They saw no man any more, save Jesus only”:After the divine affirmation and the disappearance of Moses and Elijah, the disciples were left with Jesus alone. This verse highlights the exclusivity of Jesus’ presence and the significance of focusing on Him. The Law and the Prophets had served their purpose, but now Jesus, the Son of God, was the one to whom they needed to listen. It emphasises the supremacy of Christ and the importance of His teachings for the disciples and for all believers.

  • Focus on Jesus:Just as the disciples saw no one but Jesus, it is crucial for us to keep our focus on Jesus Christ. He is the central figure of our faith, and it is through Him that we receive salvation, guidance, and spiritual nourishment. In a world filled with distractions, we need to fix our eyes on Jesus and seek Him in all things.
  • The authority of Jesus:The Transfiguration revealed Jesus’ authority as the Son of God. His authority extends over the Law, the Prophets, and all aspects of life. We are called to submit to His authority and obey His teachings, knowing that He is the ultimate source of truth and wisdom.
  • Confirmation of Jesus’ identity:The Transfiguration served as a confirmation of Jesus’ identity as the Son of God. It affirmed His divine nature and purpose. As believers, we can find assurance in the Transfiguration account that Jesus is who He claimed to be, and our faith in Him is well-placed.

In summary, Mark 9:8 captures the moment when the disciples saw no one but Jesus after the Transfiguration. This verse reminds us to focus on Jesus, recognise His authority, and affirm His identity as the Son of God. May we continually seek Him, listen to His teachings, and live in obedience to His will.
