Mark 15:5

Listen to this article

“But Jesus yet answered nothing; so that Pilate marvelled.”

Mark 15:5 (KJV) says: But Jesus yet answered nothing; so that Pilate marvelled.

This verse is part of the narrative of Jesus’ trial before Pilate, the Roman governor, leading up to His crucifixion. Here, we witness Jesus’ silence in response to the accusations brought against Him by the chief priests and elders.

Historical Context: To better understand the significance of this verse, it’s helpful to consider the historical context. Jesus had been arrested and brought before the religious authorities, who sought to find a basis for accusing Him. Eventually, they handed Him over to Pilate, seeking His execution. Pilate was the Roman governor of Judea, responsible for maintaining law and order.

  • Jesus’ Silence:

In this verse, we observe Jesus remaining silent in the face of the accusations made against Him. Despite the false testimonies and the pressure to defend Himself, Jesus chose not to engage in verbal defense. This silence perplexed Pilate, who was likely accustomed to the accused proclaiming their innocence or presenting a defence.

Fulfillment of Prophecy: Jesus’ silence during His trial fulfils the prophecies foretold about the Messiah in the Old Testament. Isaiah 53:7 (KJV) prophesies, “He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth; he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth.” By remaining silent, Jesus demonstrated His willingness to fulfil the Scriptures and submit to God’s plan of salvation.

Jesus’ Purpose: Jesus’ silence before Pilate also reflects His commitment to His mission. Throughout His ministry, Jesus consistently emphasised that His kingdom was not of this world (John 18:36). His focus was on accomplishing the will of His Father, which involved offering Himself as the sacrificial Lamb of God to redeem humanity from sin. His silence before Pilate highlighted His unwavering dedication to the purpose for which He came into the world.

Pilate’s Marvel: The response of Pilate, as mentioned in the verse, indicates his astonishment at Jesus’ refusal to defend Himself. Pilate, being aware of Jesus’ growing popularity among the people, may have expected Him to exercise His authority and assert His innocence. However, Jesus’ silence and calm demeanour challenged Pilate’s preconceived notions and caused him to marvel at the unusual behaviour of the accused.

In conclusion, Mark 15:5 captures the moment when Jesus, facing false accusations, chose to remain silent before Pilate. His silence fulfilled prophecy, demonstrated His commitment to His mission, and caused Pilate to marvel. This verse serves as a reminder of Jesus’ unwavering determination to fulfil God’s plan of redemption and His willingness to endure unjust treatment for the sake of humanity’s salvation.
