Mark 16:20

Posted on 18 May at 14:14

“20 And they went forth, and preached everywhere, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following. Amen.”

Context:Mark 16:20 is the concluding verse of the Gospel of Mark, specifically the last section known as the longer ending of Mark. This section describes the events that took place after Jesus’ resurrection and before His ascension. It highlights the disciples’ mission of preaching the Gospel and the confirmation of their message through miraculous signs.

Going forth and preaching:The verse begins with “And they went forth, and preached everywhere.” It emphasizes the disciples’ obedience to Jesus’ command to go into all the world and proclaim the good news (Mark 16:15). This verse reflects the Great Commission given by Jesus to His followers.

The Lord working with them:The verse continues with the phrase “the Lord working with them.” This statement signifies the presence and active participation of the Lord Jesus Himself alongside the disciples. It implies that they were not alone in their mission but were empowered and guided by the Lord. It emphasizes the partnership between the disciples and Jesus in their ministry.

Confirming the word with signs following:The verse concludes with the phrase “and confirming the word with signs following.” It indicates that the disciples’ preaching was accompanied by supernatural signs and wonders that validated and affirmed the message they proclaimed. These signs served as evidence of the power and authority behind their words, providing confirmation to those who heard them.

The importance of signs and miracles:Throughout the Gospel of Mark, there is an emphasis on the miracles performed by Jesus. These signs authenticated His identity as the Messiah and demonstrated God’s power at work. Similarly, in this verse, the signs following the disciples’ preaching validate the truth of the Gospel and authenticate their ministry. Miracles served as a means to gain attention, instill faith, and verify the authority of the message they proclaimed.

The continuing impact:The verse ends with the word “Amen,” which is a Hebrew word meaning “so be it” or “truly.” It signifies affirmation and agreement with the preceding statement. In this context, it confirms the ongoing reality of the disciples’ ministry and the confirmation of their message through signs.

In conclusion, Mark 16:20 highlights the disciples’ obedience to the Great Commission, their partnership with the Lord in their mission, and the confirmation of their message through supernatural signs. It serves as a reminder that God’s power continues to work through His followers today, confirming the truth of the Gospel and pointing people to Jesus.
