“And Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her.”

Context:Luke 1:26-38 records the account of the angel Gabriel appearing to Mary to announce that she will conceive and give birth to Jesus, the Son of God. In this verse, we find Mary’s response to this incredible news.

Humility and Submission:Mary’s first words, “Behold the handmaid of the Lord,” reveal her humility and submission to God’s will. She recognizes herself as a servant of the Lord, acknowledging His authority over her life. Mary’s humble response sets an example for believers, teaching us the importance of surrendering our lives to God’s plans and purposes.

Trust and Faith:Mary’s statement, “be it unto me according to thy word,” demonstrates her trust and faith in God’s promise. Despite the incomprehensible nature of the news and the potential challenges she may face, Mary fully trusts that God will fulfill His word. Her response reflects a deep faith and reliance on God’s faithfulness.

Obedience and Acceptance:Mary’s willingness to accept God’s plan for her life is evident in her response. She doesn’t question or doubt the angel’s message but accepts it with obedience. Mary’s obedience to God’s will paves the way for the fulfillment of God’s redemptive plan through the birth of Jesus.

Lessons for Believers:Mary’s response to the angel Gabriel teaches believers several important lessons. It highlights the significance of humility, acknowledging our role as servants of God. It encourages trust and faith in God’s promises, even in the face of uncertainty or difficulty. Mary’s example also underscores the importance of obediently accepting and aligning our lives with God’s will.

  • Humility:Reflect on your own life and consider areas where you need to cultivate humility before God. Embrace the posture of a servant, recognizing that God is the ultimate authority in your life.
  • Trust and Faith:Strengthen your trust in God’s promises and faithfulness. Meditate on His faithfulness in the past and hold on to His promises for your present and future.
  • Obedience:Seek to obey God’s will in every aspect of your life. Pray for the willingness to accept His plans, even when they may be different from your own desires or expectations.

Remember, Mary’s response to God’s plan serves as an inspiration for all believers, demonstrating the power of humble submission, trust, faith, and obedience in the face of God’s calling.
