Listen to this article

“And she spake out with a loud voice, and said, Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb!”

Context:Luke 1:42 is a part of the narrative surrounding the birth of Jesus Christ and the events leading up to it. In this particular verse, we find Mary, the mother of Jesus, visiting her relative Elizabeth, who is pregnant with John the Baptist. When Mary greets Elizabeth, the Holy Spirit fills Elizabeth, and she speaks these words.

Elizabeth exclaims, “Blessed art thou among women.” This statement acknowledges Mary’s unique role and favor with God. Mary was chosen to bear the Son of God, Jesus, and this position set her apart from all other women in history. It is a recognition of the special blessing bestowed upon her.

Elizabeth continues by saying, “blessed is the fruit of thy womb.” This phrase refers to Jesus, the child growing in Mary’s womb. It acknowledges the significance and blessing of the child she is carrying. Jesus is not just an ordinary child but the long-awaited Messiah, the Savior of the world. This phrase acknowledges the divine nature of Jesus and the blessing that comes through Him.

Elizabeth’s words reflect the profound impact and importance of Jesus’ birth. Her recognition of Mary’s blessed state and the significance of Jesus as the fruit of her womb emphasize the unique role and divine purpose of both Mary and Jesus in God’s plan of salvation.

This verse also highlights the joy and wonder surrounding the coming of the Messiah. Elizabeth’s exclamation of blessing and joy is a foreshadowing of the joy that would come with Jesus’ birth, as the long-awaited promise of redemption and salvation was about to be fulfilled.

Overall, Luke 1:42 is a testament to the divine favour bestowed upon Mary and the blessedness of Jesus as the long-awaited Saviour. It sets the stage for the extraordinary events that would unfold and reminds us of the joyous nature of Christ’s coming into the world.
