Luke 1:64

Listen to this article

“And his mouth was opened immediately, and his tongue loosed, and he spake, and praised God.”

Certainly! Let’s study Luke 1:64 in the King James Version (KJV) of the Bible. This verse is part of the narrative surrounding the birth of John the Baptist. Here is

“And his mouth was opened immediately, and his tongue loosed, and he spake, and praised God.”

This verse is found within the larger context of the miraculous events leading up to the birth of John the Baptist. To fully understand its significance, let’s examine the broader passage of Luke 1:57-64:

“Now Elisabeth’s full time came that she should be delivered, and she brought forth a son. And her neighbours and her cousins heard how the Lord had showed great mercy upon her, and they rejoiced with her. And it came to pass, that on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child; and they called him Zacharias, after the name of his father. And his mother answered and said, Not so; but he shall be called John. And they said unto her, There is none of thy kindred that is called by this name. And they made signs to his father, how he would have him called. And he asked for a writing table, and wrote, saying, His name is John. And they marveled all. And his mouth was opened immediately, and his tongue loosed, and he spake, and praised God.”

In this passage, Zacharias, the father of John the Baptist, had been struck dumb by the angel Gabriel because he doubted the angel’s message concerning the birth of his son. However, after the birth, during the circumcision ceremony, Zacharias confirmed the name of the child to be “John,” in obedience to the angel’s instructions.

Upon confirming the name, a miraculous event occurred: Zacharias’ mouth was opened, his tongue was loosed, and he began to speak. Filled with the Holy Spirit, Zacharias praised and glorified God for the fulfillment of His promises and the miraculous birth of his son.

This verse highlights the power and faithfulness of God in keeping His promises. Despite Zacharias’ initial doubt, God remained faithful and fulfilled His plan for John’s birth. The opening of Zacharias’ mouth and the restoration of his speech demonstrate God’s divine intervention and the importance of obedience to His commands.

Furthermore, this passage reveals the significance of John the Baptist’s role in preparing the way for the coming of Jesus Christ. Zacharias’ praise and thanksgiving to God for the birth of his son foreshadow the essential ministry that John would carry out later in his life, as he proclaimed the arrival of the Messiah and prepared people’s hearts for His coming.

In summary, Luke 1:64 (KJV) showcases the miraculous event of Zacharias’ mouth being opened, his tongue being loosed, and his subsequent praise and thanksgiving to God. It serves as a reminder of God’s faithfulness, the importance of obedience, and the significant role John the Baptist would play in preparing the way for Jesus Christ.
