Luke 4:18
The Spirit of the Lord is vpon mee, because hee hath anointed mee, to preach the Gospel to the poore, he hath sent mee to heale the broken hearted, to preach deliuerance to the captiues, and recouering of sight to the blinde, to set at libertie them that are bruised, Luke 4:18 (KJV)
This declaration occurs as Jesus returns to Nazareth and enters the synagogue, as was His custom, to read Scripture. He is handed the scroll of the prophet Isaiah and finds the passage that He now reads aloud. By proclaiming these words, Jesus identifies Himself as the one anointed by the Holy Spirit for a specific mission.
The anointing sets Him apart and empowers Him to fulfill the purposes listed in the verse. First, He comes to preach the gospel to the poor—those who are spiritually impoverished and in need of God’s grace. Second, He is sent to heal the brokenhearted, offering comfort to those wounded by grief, loss, or emotional pain. Third, He proclaims deliverance to the captives, freeing people from the bondage of sin, addiction, and any form of oppression. Fourth, He restores sight to the blind, a phrase that includes both physical and spiritual blindness, opening eyes to divine truth. Finally, He sets at liberty those who are bruised, liberating the oppressed and downtrodden who bear the weight of sin and life’s hardships.
When Jesus quotes Isaiah, He declares Himself the fulfillment of the prophecy. The Spirit’s anointing equips Him to accomplish these tasks, and through His life, death, and resurrection He brings the redemptive plan of God to completion.
The application of this passage is clear for believers today. It reveals the heart of Christ—compassion, love, and a desire to bring healing, restoration, and freedom. Followers of Jesus are called to continue His ministry by sharing the gospel with the needy, showing compassion to the brokenhearted, working for the liberation of those in bondage, and seeking to bring spiritual sight to the blind. In doing so, we participate in the ongoing work of Christ’s kingdom, advancing justice and freedom for the oppressed.
