Luke 4:40
“Now when the sun was setting, all they that had any sick with divers diseases brought them unto him; and he laid his hands on every one of them, and healed them.”
Context:This verse is found in the Gospel of Luke, specifically in the section where Jesus is beginning His ministry. In the preceding verses, Jesus had been teaching in the synagogue in Capernaum and had cast out a demon from a man. Following this, He left the synagogue and entered Simon Peter’s house, where Peter’s mother-in-law was healed. The verse you mentioned occurs after sunset, when people brought their sick to Jesus, and He healed them.
Healing Ministry:Luke emphasises Jesus’ healing ministry throughout his Gospel. In this verse, we see the compassion and power of Jesus as He heals “all they that had any sick with divers diseases.” It highlights His divine authority and ability to restore physical health. Jesus’ miracles of healing not only alleviated suffering but also demonstrated His identity as the Son of God and the fulfilment of Old Testament prophecies regarding the Messiah.
The Power of Jesus’ Touch:Notice that Jesus “laid his hands on every one of them” as a means of healing. This physical touch was not merely symbolic; it carried power and conveyed the healing virtue of Jesus. In other instances, people sought to touch Jesus, believing that even touching the hem of His garment would bring healing (Luke 8:43-48). This demonstrates the faith and expectancy people had in Jesus’ ability to heal.
Compassion and Availability:The fact that people brought their sick to Jesus indicates their faith in His healing power. It also reveals Jesus’ compassion and willingness to meet people’s needs. He did not turn anyone away but healed every person who came to Him. Jesus’ availability and willingness to minister to people in their distress is a powerful example for us today. He still invites us to come to Him with our needs, and He has the power to bring healing and restoration to our lives.
Application:This verse challenges us to approach Jesus with our own needs, whether they are physical, emotional, or spiritual. Just as those who brought their sick to Jesus, we can come to Him in faith, believing that He has the power to heal and restore. It reminds us that Jesus is not distant or uncaring but is ready to respond to our cries for help. We can find comfort and hope in knowing that Jesus is present with us and that His healing touch is available to us today.
