Luke 7:43

“Simon answered and said, I suppose that he, to whom he forgave most. And he said unto him, Thou hast rightly judged.”

Context:In this verse, Simon, who was a Pharisee, had invited Jesus to his house and witnessed a woman, known as a sinner, anointing Jesus’ feet with oil and her tears. Simon had questioned Jesus’ identity as a prophet because he believed Jesus should have known that the woman was a sinner and should not have allowed her to touch Him.

Jesus then responds to Simon’s thoughts by telling him a parable about two debtors, one who owed a creditor 500 pence and another who owed 50. Neither of them could repay their debt, so the creditor forgave both debts. Jesus asked Simon which of the debtors would love the creditor more, to which Simon answered, “I suppose that he, to whom he forgave most.”

Jesus affirmed Simon’s answer, saying that he had rightly judged. Through this parable, Jesus highlighted the woman’s great love and gratitude towards Him because she recognised her sins and sought forgiveness. In contrast, Simon, though inviting Jesus to his house, had failed to show the same level of love and respect for Jesus.

This passage emphasises the importance of recognising our need for forgiveness and the depth of gratitude that flows from the experience of being forgiven. It also points out the importance of humility and recognising our own sins rather than focusing on the shortcomings of others.
