Luke 9:55

Listen to this article

“But he turned, and rebuked them, and said, Ye know not what manner of spirit ye are of.”

This verse is part of a narrative in which Jesus and His disciples were traveling through Samaria on their way to Jerusalem. They encountered opposition from the Samaritans because the Samaritans did not receive Jesus, knowing that He was heading to Jerusalem.

In response to this rejection, James and John, two of Jesus’ disciples, were indignant and asked Jesus if they should call down fire from heaven to consume the Samaritans. Their reaction reveals their zeal and desire for immediate judgment on those who opposed Jesus.

However, Jesus rebuked them and corrected their attitude, saying, “Ye know not what manner of spirit ye are of.” Jesus’ response highlights several important teachings:

Love and compassion:Jesus’ rebuke challenges the disciples’ harsh and vengeful mindset. He emphasizes the need for love and compassion even in the face of rejection or opposition. Jesus consistently taught His disciples to respond with love and forgiveness rather than retaliation.

Patience and longsuffering:By urging His disciples to restrain their impulse for immediate judgment and punishment, Jesus demonstrates the importance of patience and longsuffering. He was aware that His mission was not about destruction but redemption and salvation.

Discernment and self-awareness:Jesus reminds the disciples that their attitudes and actions should reflect the nature of the Holy Spirit. He encourages them to examine their own hearts and motivations. It serves as a reminder that followers of Christ should be guided by the Spirit of God and exhibit His qualities in their interactions with others.

The primacy of God’s will:Jesus’ response underscores His unwavering commitment to fulfilling the Father’s will. He acknowledges that their immediate desire for judgment on the Samaritans was not aligned with God’s purpose. Jesus consistently emphasized the importance of obedience to God’s will above personal desires or impulsive reactions.

This verse serves as a reminder to all believers to carefully consider their attitudes, actions, and motivations in light of Christ’s teachings. It encourages followers of Jesus to cultivate a spirit of love, compassion, patience, discernment, and alignment with God’s will in all circumstances.
