Luke 9:57

Listen to this article

And it came to passe that as they went in the way, a certaine man said vnto him, Lord, I wil follow thee whithersoeuer thou goest. Luke 9:57 (KJV)

This verse belongs to the larger passage of Luke 9:51‑62, which records Jesus’ determined journey toward Jerusalem and the encounters that occur along the way. Before this statement, Jesus had set His face toward Jerusalem (Luke 9:51) and sent messengers ahead to a Samaritan village, only to be rejected (Luke 9:52‑53). The rejection prompted a rebuke from some of the disciples of John and some Pharisees (Luke 9:54‑55), but there is no record of anyone suggesting that fire be called down from heaven. In the following verse (Luke 9:56), Jesus emphasizes that His mission is to save lives rather than to destroy them.

The man’s declaration, “Lord, I will follow thee whithersoever thou goest,” expresses a strong desire to accompany Jesus wherever He travels. By addressing Jesus as “Lord,” the man acknowledges Jesus’ authority and lordship over his life, indicating a willingness to commit fully to discipleship.

Jesus often challenged His followers to count the cost of discipleship and to understand the sacrifices involved (see Luke 9:23‑26; Luke 14:25‑33). In the immediate context (Luke 9:58‑62), He responds to the man’s statement by pointing out the hardships that may accompany following Him. He notes that even animals have dwelling places, yet the Son of Man has no place to lay His head (Luke 9:58), highlighting the itinerant nature of His ministry and the potential lack of security for His disciples.

Jesus then addresses others who wish to follow Him but request delays or prioritize other concerns. He stresses that following Him requires unwavering dedication, placing the call to discipleship above familial obligations and personal ambitions (Luke 9:59‑62).

In summary, Luke 9:57 records a man’s eager proclamation to follow Jesus wherever He goes. Jesus’ subsequent response reveals the challenges and sacrifices inherent in true discipleship, urging believers to embrace wholehearted commitment and to prioritize Him above all else. The passage reminds us that following Christ involves personal cost, yet it also promises the immeasurable reward of walking with the Lord and participating in His redemptive mission.
