Luke 10:6

And if the sonne of peace be there, your peace shall rest vpon it: if not, it shall turne to you againe. Luke 10:6 (KJV)

Jesus’ words in Luke 10:6 are part of His instructions to the seventy‑two disciples He sent out to preach and heal in various towns and villages. In this verse He is teaching them about entering homes and how to respond to the people they encounter. The phrase “son of peace” or “that house be worthy” refers to a person or household that welcomes the disciples with hospitality and openness—a place receptive to the message of peace they bring.

When the disciples find such a worthy household, their peace shall rest upon it. This resting of peace signifies a blessing of spiritual well‑being, harmony, and reconciliation with God. The disciples experience a sense of peace and acceptance in that place, and the household receives the presence of God’s peace and favour.

If no such person is present, or if the house is not worthy, the peace they intended to share returns to them. The peace “turns back” to the disciples, indicating that the peace they carry is not lost but remains with them. They are therefore not to be discouraged by rejection, because true peace comes from God and remains with the messenger regardless of external circumstances.

Application of this teaching is clear.

Believers are called to be receptive to God’s messengers, offering hospitality and openness so that God’s peace may rest upon the household. Likewise, followers of Jesus are urged to be instruments of peace themselves, bringing blessing to others through love, forgiveness, and reconciliation. Finally, the passage encourages believers not to be disheartened by opposition or lack of acceptance; the peace that surpasses understanding is a divine gift that stays with the believer even when it is not received by others.
