Luke 10:33

“But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was: and when he saw him, he had compassion on him”

Context:The parable of the Good Samaritan is found in Luke 10:25-37. In this parable, Jesus tells a story in response to a lawyer’s question about who his neighbour is. The parable highlights the concept of loving one’s neighbour as oneself.

The characters: In the parable, a man is travelling from Jerusalem to Jericho and falls among robbers who strip him, beat him, and leave him half dead. A priest and a Levite pass by without offering help. However, a Samaritan, who was despised by Jews at that time, stops to help the wounded man.

The act of compassion: In Luke 10:33, we see that the Samaritan “saw him” and “had compassion on him.” This verse emphasises the Samaritan’s empathy and willingness to take action. Compassion moved him to show mercy and provide assistance to someone in need.

Lessons and application: This verse teaches us several valuable lessons:

  • a. The importance of seeing:The Samaritan noticed the wounded man. Sometimes, we can be oblivious to the needs of others around us. This verse reminds us to be observant and attentive to those who require our help.
  • b. The power of compassion:The Samaritan’s compassion motivated him to take action. True compassion moves beyond pity or sympathy and drives us to actively help others in their time of need. It is a quality we should cultivate in our own lives.
  • c. The inclusiveness of neighbourly love:The parable challenges the lawyer’s initial question about who his neighbour is. Jesus expands the definition of neighbour to include anyone in need, regardless of social, ethnic, or religious differences. We are called to show love and compassion to all, just as the Samaritan did.
  • d. The call to practical love:The Good Samaritan didn’t just feel sorry for the wounded man; he went above and beyond to provide care and ensure his well-being. This challenges us to put our faith into action by actively serving and helping those in need around us.
