Luke 11:5

Posted on 18 May at 14:40

“And he said unto them, Which of you shall have a friend, and shall go unto him at midnight, and say unto him, Friend, lend me three loaves;”

Context:To fully understand this verse, it is important to consider the broader context. In Luke 11, Jesus teaches his disciples about prayer, particularly through the Lord’s Prayer (verses 1-4). After teaching them how to pray, Jesus shares a parable to emphasize the importance of persistence in prayer and trusting in God’s provision.

The Parable of the Friend at Midnight:In this parable, Jesus tells a story about someone who goes to his friend’s house at midnight to ask for three loaves of bread. The key elements of the parable are as follows:

– The person seeking the bread represents someone in need, who approaches God in prayer.

– The friend inside the house represents God, who is willing to provide what is needed.

– The midnight setting emphasizes the urgency and persistence in seeking God’s provision.

Lessons from the Parable:

  • Importunity in Prayer:The parable highlights the importance of being persistent and bold in prayer. Just as the person in the story did not hesitate to approach his friend at midnight, Jesus encourages his disciples to approach God in prayer without hesitation.
  • Confidence in God’s Provision:The parable also teaches us to have faith in God’s willingness and ability to provide for our needs. The friend eventually gives the bread not because of their friendship but because of the persistent request. In contrast, God, who is our Heavenly Father, is even more willing to provide for His children when they ask.
  • Application to our Prayer Life:
  • Persistence:We should persistently bring our needs and desires before God in prayer. We are encouraged to keep praying and not lose heart, trusting that God hears our prayers and will respond according to His perfect timing and wisdom (Luke 18:1-8).
  • Trust in God’s Provision:Just as the person in the parable trusted his friend to provide the bread, we are called to trust in God’s provision. God knows our needs even before we ask, and He promises to provide for us (Matthew 6:8, Philippians 4:19).
  • Boldness in Prayer:The parable encourages us to approach God boldly and with confidence, knowing that He is our loving Heavenly Father who desires to bless us and meet our needs (Hebrews 4:16, 1 John 5:14-15).
  • Time and Timing:The mention of midnight in the parable suggests that we can bring our needs to God at any time. God is always available and ready to hear our prayers. However, the parable also teaches us to trust in God’s perfect timing. Sometimes, we need to be patient and continue to seek God’s provision while waiting for His answer.

In conclusion, Luke 11:5 and the parable of the friend at midnight emphasize the importance of persistence, trust, and boldness in prayer. We are encouraged to bring our needs before God, believing that He hears us and will provide for us according to His perfect timing and wisdom.
