Luke 11:41

Posted on 18 May at 14:40

“Give alms of such things as ye have; and, behold, all things are clean unto you.”

Context:Before we dive into the verse itself, it’s important to understand the context. In Luke 11, Jesus is invited to dine at the house of a Pharisee, where He engages in a conversation and confrontation with the Pharisees and experts in the law. Jesus speaks strongly against their hypocrisy, self-righteousness, and neglect of justice and mercy.

This verse is part of a larger passage where Jesus is addressing the Pharisees and religious leaders, rebuking them for their hypocrisy and lack of concern for justice, mercy, and the love of God. In this particular verse, Jesus is emphasizing the importance of giving to those in need and the spiritual blessings that come from such acts.

"Give alms":The phrase “Give alms” refers to acts of charity or giving to the poor. Jesus frequently emphasized the importance of caring for the marginalized and needy in society. Here, He encourages His listeners to give from what they have to those in need.

"Of such things as ye have":Jesus is not necessarily prescribing a specific formula or quantity of giving. Instead, He emphasizes the idea of giving according to one’s means or resources. It suggests that individuals should give out of their abundance or whatever they possess, whether it is material possessions, time, talents, or resources.

"And, behold, all things are clean unto you":This phrase can be interpreted in a couple of ways. Firstly, it can be understood in a literal sense. In the context of Jewish customs and traditions, the Pharisees were concerned with ceremonial cleanliness and observing various rituals to maintain ritual purity. Jesus is saying that when they give alms or practice acts of charity, they are fulfilling a higher form of purity in God’s eyes.

Secondly, it can also be understood metaphorically. By giving to those in need, one’s heart is transformed and purified. Acts of charity and generosity reflect a heart aligned with God’s love and compassion. When our hearts are pure, all aspects of our lives become cleaner and more aligned with God’s will.

Overall, Luke 11:41 emphasizes the importance of giving to those in need and the spiritual benefits that arise from such acts. It challenges us to examine our hearts, attitudes, and actions towards the less fortunate and encourages us to live with compassion, generosity, and purity before God.
