Luke 22:39

Listen to this article

“And he came out, and went, as he was wont, to the mount of Olives; and his disciples also followed him.”

Context:Luke 22:39 is part of the account of Jesus’ final hours before His crucifixion. In the preceding verses, Jesus celebrates the Last Supper with His disciples and institutes the Lord’s Supper. He also predicts Peter’s denial and foretells His own betrayal by Judas Iscariot.

The Mount of Olives:The Mount of Olives was a place of significance for Jesus. He often went there to pray and teach His disciples. It was located just east of Jerusalem, across the Kidron Valley, and provided a secluded place for Jesus to spend time with His Father in prayer.

Jesus’ Prayer:Following His arrival at the Mount of Olives, Jesus engages in an intense prayer session. The subsequent verses (Luke 22:40-46) describe Jesus’ deep anguish and His plea to His Father to let the cup of suffering pass from Him, if it was God’s will. This prayer reveals Jesus’ humanity and His submission to the Father’s plan.

The Disciples:Luke notes that Jesus’ disciples also followed Him to the Mount of Olives. This emphasizes the close relationship Jesus had with His disciples and their desire to be with Him during this critical time. However, their inability to fully comprehend the gravity of the events unfolding is evident as they struggle to stay awake and pray with Jesus.

  • Importance of Prayer:Jesus’ example highlights the importance of prayer, especially during times of great trial or decision-making. Just as Jesus sought communion with the Father through prayer, we should also cultivate a habit of spending time with God in prayer, seeking His guidance and strength.
  • Submission to God’s Will:Jesus’ prayer demonstrates His submission to God’s will. Despite His personal desires, Jesus surrenders Himself to the Father’s plan for the redemption of humanity. This serves as a reminder for us to align our will with God’s and trust His purposes, even when faced with difficult circumstances.
  • Support of Christian Community:The disciples’ presence with Jesus during this challenging period reminds us of the importance of community and supporting one another in times of need. We should strive to be present for our brothers and sisters in Christ, offering comfort, encouragement, and prayerful support.

In conclusion, Luke 22:39 captures a significant moment in Jesus’ journey towards the cross. It highlights the Mount of Olives as a place of prayer and retreat for Jesus, the disciples’ companionship, and the crucial lesson of prayer and submission to God’s will.
