Luke 23:37

And saying, If thou be the king of the Jews, save thyself.

Luke 23:37 (KJV)

The soldiers at the cross speak these words as part of the crucifixion narrative. The same taunt appears in Matthew 27:42 and Mark 15:31, and Luke records a similar jeer in Luke 23:38, where the soldiers say, “Save yourself, being a King.” The Roman soldiers and onlookers mock Jesus, challenging Him to rescue Himself if He truly is the King of the Jews.

The title “King of the Jews” was a messianic title expected by the people of Israel. The Jews longed for a deliverer who would establish a kingdom and free them from oppression. By using the title mockingly, the soldiers expressed doubt about Jesus’ claim to be the Messiah and highlighted the gap between earthly expectations and the reality of His mission.

The mocking tone echoes the lament of Psalm 22:7-8, which records contemptuous jeering: “All they that see me laugh me to scorn…” While the Psalm does not explicitly predict the crucifixion scene, its language reflects the ridicule Jesus endured on the cross.

The soldiers’ challenge, “save thyself,” confronts Jesus with the possibility of escaping the cross. Yet He willingly endured the suffering because it was integral to His purpose: to offer Himself as the atoning sacrifice for humanity’s sins (John 10:17-18). His death was not a defeat but the fulfillment of God’s redemptive plan.

Ironically, the soldiers’ mockery points to the truth of Jesus’ kingship. Scripture affirms that He is the King of kings and Lord of lords (Revelation 19:16). His reign, however, is not an earthly one; He declared that His kingdom is not of this world (John 18:36). His kingship is defined by humility, sacrifice, and love rather than power and domination.

This verse serves as a reminder of Jesus’ willingness to endure mockery, rejection, and suffering for the salvation of humanity. It challenges each reader to examine their own response to Christ’s kingship and to recognize Him as the sovereign Lord of their lives.
