John 3:12

Posted on 18 May at 14:37

“If I have told you earthly things, and ye believe not, how shall ye believe, if I tell you of heavenly things?”

Context:To better understand this verse, let’s examine its context. John 3:12 is part of a conversation between Jesus and Nicodemus, a Pharisee and member of the Jewish ruling council. Nicodemus came to Jesus seeking wisdom and understanding.

Earthly and Heavenly Things:In this verse, Jesus contrasts “earthly things” with “heavenly things.” Earlier in the conversation, Jesus spoke to Nicodemus about the necessity of being “born again” in order to see the kingdom of God (John 3:3). Jesus used this metaphorical language to explain the concept of spiritual rebirth or transformation.

Lack of Understanding:Jesus expresses his frustration with Nicodemus’ lack of understanding. He tells Nicodemus that if he is unable to comprehend the earthly things (such as the concept of being born again), then how will he believe or grasp the heavenly things that Jesus wants to reveal?

Gradual Revelation:Throughout the Gospel of John, we see a pattern of Jesus gradually revealing deeper spiritual truths to His disciples and others. He begins with more accessible teachings and gradually unveils greater revelations about His divine nature, the kingdom of God, and salvation.

The Need for Faith:This verse emphasizes the importance of faith in understanding spiritual truths. Jesus implies that if Nicodemus cannot believe or comprehend the earthly things, his ability to grasp the heavenly things will be even more challenging. Faith is essential for receiving and understanding the deeper truths of God’s kingdom.

Application:The message of John 3:12 extends beyond Nicodemus and has relevance for us today. It reminds us of the importance of having a receptive heart, faith, and a willingness to learn from Jesus. Just as Nicodemus needed to open his mind and heart to Jesus’ teachings, we must approach the Scriptures with a humble and teachable spirit.

  • Seek Understanding:As believers, we should strive to grow in our understanding of God’s Word and the heavenly truths it reveals. This requires a personal relationship with Jesus, studying the Scriptures, and seeking the guidance of the Holy Spirit. The more we grow in faith and knowledge, the better equipped we will be to grasp the heavenly things that God desires to reveal to us.
