John 4:6

Posted on 18 May at 14:37

“Now Jacob’s well was there. Jesus therefore, being wearied with his journey, sat thus on the well: and it was about the sixth hour.”

In this verse, we gain insights into the setting and circumstances surrounding Jesus’ encounter with the Samaritan woman.

The location:Jacob’s well. The verse begins by mentioning Jacob’s well. This well was significant because it was believed to have been dug by Jacob, the biblical patriarch, many centuries earlier (Genesis 33:18-19). It was located near the town of Sychar in Samaria, which Jesus was passing through on His journey from Judea to Galilee.

Jesus’ weariness. The verse states that Jesus, being wearied from His journey, sat down by the well. This shows Jesus’ humanity and physical fatigue after traveling. It’s a reminder that Jesus experienced the limitations and challenges of being human.

The timing: the sixth hour. The verse concludes by mentioning that it was about the sixth hour. In Jewish timekeeping, the sixth hour corresponded to noon. This detail helps us understand the timing of the encounter between Jesus and the Samaritan woman.

This verse sets the stage for the subsequent conversation between Jesus and the Samaritan woman, where Jesus offers her “living water” and reveals Himself as the Messiah (John 4:7-26). The weariness Jesus experienced serves as a backdrop to demonstrate His compassion and willingness to engage in dialogue with those who society considered outcasts or despised.

Overall, this verse provides historical context and highlights the humanity of Jesus, setting the scene for an important encounter that leads to the revelation of His identity as the Savior.
