John 6:10

Listen to this article

“And Jesus said, Make the men sit down. Now there was much grass in the place. So the men sat down, in number about five thousand.”

Context:John 6:10 is a verse from the Gospel of John, specifically in the account of the feeding of the five thousand. This miracle is one of the few events recorded in all four Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John), emphasizing its significance.

Feeding of the Five Thousand:Prior to this verse, Jesus had been teaching and healing large crowds of people who had followed Him to a remote place. The day was coming to an end, and the disciples suggested sending the people away to find food. However, Jesus had a different plan and used this opportunity to perform a great miracle by multiplying a young boy’s five barley loaves and two fish to feed the multitude.

Jesus’ Instruction:In John 6:10, Jesus instructs the people to sit down. This action serves as a practical measure to organize and prepare for the upcoming miracle. By asking the people to sit down, Jesus demonstrates order and signals that something significant is about to happen.

Abundance:The verse also highlights the abundant provision of God. It mentions that there was much grass in the place, indicating that it was a suitable location for people to sit down comfortably. The fact that the men sat down in “number about five thousand” indicates the size of the crowd that witnessed this extraordinary event.

Faith and Obedience:Although the verse itself does not explicitly mention faith or obedience, it is important to note that the people followed Jesus’ instructions by sitting down. Their obedience and trust in Jesus allowed them to witness and partake in the miraculous feeding that followed.

Significance and Lessons:This verse, as part of the larger story of the feeding of the five thousand, demonstrates Jesus’ compassion, power, and ability to provide for the needs of His people. It highlights His divine nature and His role as the Bread of Life (which is further elaborated upon in the subsequent verses). The feeding of the five thousand serves as a powerful symbol of God’s abundant provision and care for His followers.
