John 6:29

Posted on 18 May at 14:37

“Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent.”

This verse is part of a larger conversation between Jesus and a crowd of people who had followed Him after witnessing the miraculous feeding of the five thousand with just five loaves of bread and two fish. They were seeking more signs and miracles from Him, but Jesus redirected their attention to the significance of their belief in Him.

The Work of God:Jesus begins by stating, “This is the work of God.” Here, Jesus is referring to the primary work that God requires from humanity. It is not about performing outward acts or following a set of rituals but about an inner response of faith and belief. The work that pleases God the most is believing in Him and the one whom He has sent.

Believing in Him:Jesus further clarifies that the work of God is to “believe on him whom he hath sent.” The focus is on personal faith in Jesus as the one sent by God. It involves acknowledging Jesus as the Son of God, the Messiah, and placing one’s trust and confidence in Him for salvation and eternal life.

Faith as the Central Requirement:This verse emphasizes that belief in Jesus is fundamental to the Christian faith. It highlights the importance of a personal relationship with Jesus Christ rather than relying solely on external religious practices. Faith in Jesus is essential for receiving salvation and is the basis of a transformed life.

Jesus as God’s Sent One:Jesus makes it clear that He is the one whom God has sent. Throughout the Gospel of John, Jesus repeatedly affirms His divine mission, declaring that He came from the Father and is in perfect unity with Him. Believing in Jesus means recognizing Him as the unique and special representative of God, sent to fulfill God’s redemptive plan for humanity.
