John 12:21

The same came therefore to Philip, which was of Bethsaida of Galilee, and desired him, saying, Sir, we would see Jesus.

Context

John 12 records the events leading up to Jesus’ crucifixion. The preceding verse identifies the people who came to Philip as “certain Greeks among them that came up to worship at the feast” (John 12:20). These were likely Gentile proselytes or God-fearers who had come to Jerusalem for Passover.

Meaning

These Greeks approached Philip, one of the twelve disciples, with the request, “Sir, we would see Jesus.” The word “see” here implies more than a casual glance; it suggests a desire to converse with Jesus and hear His teaching about His kingdom. Their approach to Philip is significant because Philip was from Bethsaida of Galilee, a town with a mixed Jewish and Gentile population, which may have made him more accessible to Greek-speaking seekers. Philip’s role was to serve as a bridge, bringing people to Jesus and facilitating their encounter with Him.

The people’s desire to see Jesus reflects a genuine longing to personally encounter the Son of God. It represents the universal human hunger for a relationship with Him and the need for salvation. Their request also sets the stage for Jesus’ response in the following verses, where He speaks of His coming glorification and the necessity of His death.

Application

We can approach Jesus through prayer, reading the Scriptures, attending worship services, and seeking fellowship with other believers. Just as Philip played a role in connecting people with Jesus, we also have the opportunity to introduce others to Him and help them experience His transforming presence.
